Christian Broughton has worked in almost every editorial department of The Independent, having first written for the comment pages of the paper in the late Nineties. After periods working elsewhere within the newspaper and magazine sectors, he has been features editor, sports editor, assistant editor and digital editor, and is now the editor. In 2012 he took charge of digital publishing, and while growing the team, together they have grown the readership, from 17 million monthly unique browsers to more than 120 million (according to ABC) and developing a growing subscriber base, a distinctive video offering, and a dominant presence on social media. With its growing international presence, The Independent is now the sixth biggest digital newspaper in the US (Comscore). Along the way the distinctive #RefugeesWelcome and anti-Brexit campaigns won attention and accolade, if not a referendum. When the 24/7-hour publishing cycle allows, he’s happiest with family and in the great outdoors – both land and sea.
